Health & Sciences Academy at BJM (2019)

Health & Sciences Academy at BJM (2019)

Are you interested in a career in medicine,
health care or science? Do you love learning and like to be challenged? If so, the Health
and Sciences Academy at Bishop James Mahoney is for you. When my teacher introduced me
to the HSA, I thought it was a really cool and interesting program for kids like me that
are interested in health and science field. The Health and Sciences Academy offers a one
of a kind experience for students and is t he only such academy in Saskatchewan. I’m excited
to be in this program because I see the potential and I know that it will help me achieve my
goals for the future. Students follow a designated academic pathway, and, while still in high
school, have the opportunity to earn dual-credits, university credits and job-related certifications.
And I get the chance to get ahead in my schooling to benefit my future career as a doctor. The
Health and Sciences Academy gives you an advantage as you prepare for your future. Also, to have
the great experience of being taught by interesting teachers who teach us interesting material
in like a new and fun way. Students will be instructed by passionate teachers, local
scientists, and professionals who have partnered with the academy. HSA classes have the benefit
of engaging in inquiry projects in and out of the classroom. Earlier this year we got
to do a lab where we got to sift through some gravel and and find like actual fossils and
identify them, so lots of fun, hands-on and engaging projects. Academy students benefit from HSA partnerships
with organizations such as Sask Polytechnic, the Saskatoon Industry Education Council,
the University of Saskatchewan’s Colleges of Nursing and Arts and Sciences,
the Saskatchewan Health Authority, the Canadian Light Source and the Saskatchewan Aviation Learning
Centre. We are very excited that next year Health and Sciences Academy students will
be able to take their first year University of Saskatchewan biology course at BJM. Students
will experience a smaller, more supportive environment at a significantly lower cost.
So in Grade 11 and Grade 12, we started doing more university courses, which is a good opportunity
to kind of get a head start. IN addition to this unique programming, HSA students at Bishop
Mahoney will be in a school that offers a faith-based education, as well as sports teams,
fine arts and many social activities that make BJM the place to be. You’re still like
part of the whole school community, and I’m still active in extra-curricular activities
too. The HSA has been able to become a leading educational program, due to the generous support
of Heather Ryan and David Dubé, who have partnered with us since the program’s inception
and have made the HSA possible. The HSA program is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I
wouldn’t pass up, and it’s so much fun. I would highly recommend it because there’s lot of fun things
that you get to do. This program has opened up my eyes to career paths that I didn’t even
really know existed or that never really interested me before. In the end, HSA students
will have more opportunities to explore their passions in science, benefit from exceptional
instruction and be better prepared for any science-related career path.
