Levy Special Education Center Pep Rally at Newman University

Levy Special Education Center Pep Rally at Newman University

We’re here today because we have
kicked off our 2018-2019 basketball season. Levy has a basketball team,
and a yell squad to cheer them on, and we’re part of the Tri County
League. Which provides athletic opportunities for students with
severe disabilities. And so every year we have a basketball season and
this year we are very privileged that we have been adopted by Newman
University. And so Newman is hosting several events for us. They’re
hosting our pep assembly today, and then our first basketball game this
afternoon. They’re hosting an additional three basketball games.
We have been able to bring our team here twice so far for practices. And
then they will host our end of the season banquet. So it’s a new
partnership, and we’re just very excited about it. Hey Levy Legends-
Levy Legends- I need everybody out that door. We are fortunate that
board member Mike Rodee has a connection with the athletic
director here at Newman; Vic Trilli. And they put their heads together
with our coach, Bill Billingsley and decided to really make this happen
for us this year. We work really hard to give our students out Levy
as much of a regular school experience as possible, and this is
just one of the ways that we’re providing for those opportunities.
So that relationship we’re just very fortunate that those connections
were there, and were made and they’ve adopted us. Previous to
this, we were hosting our pep assemblies and our banquet at Levy.
using our facilities. And then the basketball games are usually hosted
at high schools around Wichita. And then we’ve had some hosted at the
Garvey Center and the Southwest YMCA- the Farha. And we have not
currently been able to, or in the past been able to host them at our
building, because we don’t have a large enough facility. So this is
allowing us to really host games on a very, you know, nice court and
have the space to do that. I believe that we have been part of this
league for nine years. We’ve had this basketball team in place, and
our cheerleaders in place for many years but we just feel like this is
taking it to that whole next level for our students. There are a lot of
people who work behind the scenes to make this possible. We have a lot of
staff out levy that take this on and make it happen. We have
paraprofessionals staff that serve as coaches, we have teachers who are
involved, we’re fortunate that we’re able to, you know, have
transportation to get us to and from places. It’s kind of a large effort
that comes out of Levy. We’re really fortunate in that now we have some
outside support as well. But it takes a huge team of people to make
it happen.
