This game is called ‘Catch and Step’ and I
like to use this game as part of the throwing and catching progression for different sports:
baseball, football, or even just underhand or overhand throwing. It can be used through grades 1 to 8.
You will need some type of ball or to make it interesting you can use water
balloons with the older grades. So you will have students partner up. You need
even pairs (so we see different colors for different pairs). Give each group a ball to start. So start with a softball or whatever you have. Very simply we will look at one group here. The students will make a series of throws and catches back and forth to each other. If they make a throw and it has been caught without bouncing or anything like that, then the person who caught the ball steps back, so he gets to take a step back. And the game continues on, so the player will throw it back. And if the catch is made, the person who caught it gets to take a step back. What happens if they throw it and it is missed? If a catch is missed then the person who missed it has to step forward. The game goes back and forth like
that for awhile and the teacher can watch all the students with their throwing
mechanic and give tips throughout the game. Using water balloons is a fun thing you can do at the end if you want to bring them outside and go at it! That’s it for this game. Please visit
