Backhand Smash | Table Tennis | PingSkills

HI I’m Alois Rosario from PingSkills. Today
Jeff and I are going to talk to you about the Backhand Smash. The first thing that you need to know about
the Backhand Smash is you shouldn’t be playing it very often at all. If the ball is up high
enough to smash that means you also have enough time to turn around and play a Forehand Smash. So why don’t we recommend the Backhand Smash? One of the main reasons is because on the
forehand you can lift your bat up nice and high or low and adjust to the height of the
ball. On the Backhand if you’re doing that you are going to be coming across your face
with your arm and makes it a little bit harder to adjust to the height of the smash. You
could also get a bigger swing through with your forehand so you can use your rotation
of the body and your arm to come through in a bigger arc and circle than you can with
the Backhand smash. Having said that occasionally you might get caught out and not be able to
get around in time and so for that purpose we will show you the technique for the Backhand
Smash. A Backhand Smash is a shot that you play against
a ball that comes to you really high so if the ball is up that high then you can play
a Backhand Smash. If the ball is lower then you are looking to play a bit more of a Backhand
topspin or a backhand counterhit so you can have a look at our video on the Backhand topspin
or the Backhand Counterhit and both of those shots you can play quite fast but not as fast
as a Backhand Smash. The start position of the Backhand Smash is
to get your bat back and up fairly high so you want to lift it up around head high or
shoulder height in that area. Your body is also going to be turned sideways to make sure that you
can get a little bit more speed and rotation with the stroke. Then you come through and have a nice flat
contact to get the speed on the stroke. If you have a brushing contact the ball isn’t
going to travel as fast so you want to come through in a nice flat contact on the ball. And your finish position is all the way through
allowing your arm to go all the way through and around. Through the Backhand Smash allow your wrist
to be quite relaxed because you can generate a lot extra speed and power by your wrist
coming through with the stroke. If you want some really good examples of a
player that played some fantastic Backhand Smashes search for Jorgen Persson the World
Champion from Sweden that played unbelievable Backhand Smashes in match situations. 1. Don’t use a backhand smash!
2. If you do, start with your bat high 3. Hit the ball with a flat contact
4. Use your wrist for extra power 5. Play a forehand smash instead!

  29. Thanks for this. I'm a decent player strong fh. Consistent loop and bh drive but my bh smash to say its diabolical is an understatement!

  30. i dont get it when you say your contact show be nice and straight and that you shouldnt brush the ball, the ball is at your shoulder level if not higher, wont straight contact shoot it at the same level of height???

  40. I have limited skills in Table Tennis. But Thanks for these Amazing Tutorials, I am able to coach my 9 yrs old daughter. And she has improved a lot. Thank You very much for taking out the time and effort to explain TT Concepts.

  41. 3:10 the ball went out

  42. Excellent video! I try to use forehand smash as much as possible, but sometimes I just can't get around in time and have to try for the backhand smash. I was trying to angle the bat down too much and not hit it flat. I will definitely work on this from now on, as this is def. a weakness of mine.

  43. I just don't learn no backhand

have you done a video on forehand smashing
if not i think it would be a great idea

  48. thank you guys..i learned a lot from you..can return your help with anything

  49. I learned this on my own and I'm super good at it, but suck at forehand :'(

  50. haha. How to play the backhand smash.
    1. Dont

  51. Im a backhand player, but when I smash I use my forehand!! Thanks for teaching me this technique!! 🙂 Im a beter player every time I watch your vids!!

  52. When I use backhand smash I win because I played it in my school and rarely any people can counter smash unless it's the experienced player (me and others)

  53. You say that you shouldn't be playing it very often: I have a decent backhand smash – if I use it in a match situation it makes my opponents scared to put I high on your backhand thus making them more likely to put it onto my forehand for a forehand drive / smash. Also, although footwork is vital to table tennis, dancing around to the other side of the ball gives your opponent time to  get in position whereas a backhand smash just as the ball has finished rising, will often give my opponent no time to react.

  54. I need help to beat my dad

  55. Sir my backhand is very bad. I want to improve it. Give me a video on it.

  56. I am really young so please do not judge me for this question, how do you always get the ball to hit your opponent's side, why does it never go out? As I said I am still young and in school. Thank you for replying if you have the time to.

  57. please reply! so i feel way more comfeturble with the backhand smash than the forehand smash because i very often miss the forehand and i always get the backhand is it a good idea to switch?

  58. I often do backhand smashes, maybe I should replace it with backhand topspin.

  59. I've been playing table tennis for about a year and half now, and i'm about to turn 14. I have used the same bat for the whole period of me playing table tennis, the Killerspin jet 400. Now recently, i as playing in a table tennis tournament ( i won ), and my bats paddle came off, i don't know why, it just came off whilst i was playing a forehand smash. I was wondering if you could donate me a decent bat, otherwise i can't play table tennis. My family is in a 'financially negative situation' so they can't buy me a new one. You are my last resort. Your videos have really helped me progress through my table tennis, especially your trick serves video. Could you please reply ASAP so i know, or even email me at: [email protected] I really hope you say yes, because that would mean the whole world to me.

    Many thanks

  60. Make a video on confusing opponent

  61. The backhand is actually a strength of mine. I had the backhand before I had a forehand. Thanks to this video my backhand is going to be even more lethal.

  62. That's what we call Persson style backhand smash. 😉

  63. im really good at backhand but am ass at forehand is that weird
