Here’s what we’ve achieved so far..

Well, we’re coming to the end of 2019 and
you haven’t seen much of me on social media; I’ve have been so busy setting up the
Combined Authority. But this is new; we have this Combined Authority.
That puts us on the level of the other big cities like London and Manchester,
and we can make a difference. Things we’ve done already this year? We’ve been
bringing jobs here. I’ve been talking to companies who are relocating; we’re
bringing jobs, good jobs. We’ve had this fund that was due to bring 600 jobs
and just last week demand has been so great we’re going to increase it to
bring 2,000 jobs here. We’ve got innovation funds that are going to
create 200 new jobs in rural Northumberland, supporting small businesses. 250
in the urban area; in Newcastle and North Tyneside. Another 70 on the Helix
site in Newcastle and we’ve done really good work with a returnships program. So,
these are people who’ve been caring for loved ones, coming back into the workforce,
and we’re supporting them. The Working Homes program so that people in social
housing who have been away from the labour market, they’re getting the
confidence and the skills they need – and this is non-coercive, it’s nothing to do
with the Department of Work and Pensions. We’re putting money into The Newcastle
United Foundation partnership to rebuild Murray House so
there’s an outreach program doing really good sports-related work with youngsters,
to give them a bit of vision and a bit of confidence for the future. We’ve done
loads of STEM work with Kielder Observatory; you’ve seen some of that.
We’ve done work with Woodhorn Museum in Ashington, to get kids
involved. This is on top of the United Nations Climate Change Teachers
Initiative, so that we’re the first region that’s gonna have climate change
teachers in every school. You know what? That’s just what we’ve done so far.
There’s loads more in the pipeline; it’s going to be a very exciting 2020. Happy
Christmas 🙂
