How GTA Open Wheel F1 Races Work – GTA 5 Discussion #128

Hello everyone I’m Broughy1322 and this is
going to be a quick video explaining how open wheel races work, in addition to talking a
little bit about the new Progen PR4 and Ocelot R88. So first of all, and it’s kind of amazing
after covering racing in this game for almost 7 years to say this, open wheel formula 1
style cars have been added to GTA Online. The Progen PR4 is modelled after a late 80’s/early
90’s F1 car and is generally quicker than the late 70’s/early 80’s style F1 car, the
Ocelot R88 (the cars will look like different eras depending on the body mods you have on
and so forth). So if you’re only going to get one for races, you only need to think
about the PR4. Which is the more expensive car at 3.5 million dollars versus 3.1 million. We’ve also for the first time since the game
was released back in 2013 seen a brand new car class added to the game. While all arena
war or special vehicles in the past may have had specific restrictions for races, the vehicles
themselves have always been put into pre-existing classes (like super, sports, muscle, etc).
The PR4 and R88 are different because they’re in the brand new Open Wheel class. You can’t
race them against other supercars or on normal races like other classes, and I imagine Rockstar
wouldn’t go to the trouble of adding a new class for just two cars, so I expect we’ll
see more in the future (and probably even more expensive iterations if they’re modelled
on more modern open wheel cars). The cars themselves have a wide array of body
modifications including front and rear wings that actually impact performance. The general
rule is that the larger the front wing the more downforce will be on the car at the front,
and the same for the larger rear wings at the back. More downforce means more cornering
speed at the cost of straight line speed. So having the smallest wings on the front
and rear will give you the highest top speeds, but the car won’t turn quite as well as if
you had the biggest wings and the lowest top speed. Each wing is different so there are
hundreds of setup options, but I’ll cover all of that in depth in a future video after
I’ve done some extra testing. I’ll also of course be doing lap time and top speed testing
in my usual way after I have a better idea of how all the setups work. Once those videos
are live I’ll link them in the description of this video for anyone who’s watching this
later, but until then stay tuned and make sure you’re subscribed for notifications of
those videos. When it comes to open wheel races, at launch
we only have Rockstar created tracks. However I’d expect we’ll see the ability to create
open wheel races in the creator fairly soon for the community to make better things. One
of the main issues is that the Rockstar open wheel races are limited to 16 players, but
hopefully in the creator 30 will be allowed. You can find the new open wheel races by going
to the pause menu, then Online, Jobs, Play Job, Rockstar Created, Races, and scrolling
to O for Open Wheel. While some of the tracks aren’t too bad, some leave a lot to be desired
and as usual the community will most likely be able to create better suited circuits when
they’re allowed to do so. However that’s all we have at launch so if you’re jumping into
an Open Wheel race these are the nuances you need to know. First is tyre wear. In the lobby screen for
these races you can choose either Soft, Medium, or Hard tyres to apply to your car for the
race. Softs will be the quickest but last the least amount of time, Hards will last
the longest but be slowest, and Mediums are in between. When you’re in a race you’ll have
a tyre wear indicator and when that drops to the red zone you don’t have long before
you lose grip, slide out, and crash. If you let the indicator deplete completely your
wheels will pop (regardless of whether you have bulletproof wheels or not). To fix your tyres you have to drive into the
pit lane and stop while they’re regenerated. Grip does remain the same on the tyres throughout
a stint – you don’t gradually lose speed as the indicator depletes until you get to the
red zone. In general the grip advantage from soft tyres isn’t enough to make up any time
loss you’ll have in the pits, so you always want to use the hardest tyres that will get
you through a full race without having to make a pit stop. Soft tyres tend to be able
to do a full 5 lap race on these tracks, mediums will last a full 10 lap race and Hards at
least a 15 lap race, but more testing again needs to be done on all of this. Another thing to keep in mind is that these
cars have a KERS power boost system, which regenerates when you’re off throttle or braking,
and is activated by pressing the left thumb stick. When you use this boost on a lap is
important because these cars take corners so well that you’re not actually regenerating
the boost much over a lap. The KERS boost becomes active after the first lap in a race. Finally, you can lose your front and rear
wings in races and they will negatively impact performance. It’s an extreme example of what
I was talking about earlier with different wings giving different setups. Lose your front
wing and you’ll lose the ability to turn corners very well, and lose the rear wing and your
back end won’t have any grip causing it to spin around. You’ll have a higher top speed
without them but you won’t be able to corner very well. Fix these issues in a race by coming
into the pits. Respawning will not help. So for now this is a quick overview of how
these races work but when it comes to performance of the cars in terms of lap times, top speeds,
and the various naunces of tyres and body modifications, it’s going to take me some
more time to get an idea of how it all works. Like I said make sure you’re subscribed for
those videos when the testing is done, and I’ll explain how it all works and what the

  17. I can understand the races but the options on the car look really complicated to me with different wings suitable for different tracks. I might buy one tonight but not sure I'll be upgrading it until I have more of a handle and then choose what kind of races to enter.

I came back to GTA about a month ago after hearing about the open wheel dlc… all this grinding, waiting, and money spent on an almost 4 million dollar car… and of course, the GTAO community is so gd trash they ruin the experience for everyone else πŸ™ I really wanted all the grind to be worth it! It's worse than stunt races! Everyone is just too stupid to do technical races😭

  36. 1:36 Bumpers and Spoilers do make an impact in the car! I assume that there will be a spectrum of wings and spoilers that either give you higher speeds or more downforce..

  42. TBH, was hoping for a lot more cars, like early 2000s V10s/V8, modern hybrids, and especially old school 50s like a Maserati 250F. Not just a McLaren MP4-4 and a Lotus 98 (basically). And when you can make actual tracks, why are they all based on the actual map?

  45. races are absolutely unplayable. there are always 3 people going reverse and blocking people. this caused me to go from 1st to 5th twice. the other 10 players constantly ram off your wings, spin you out and crash your wings. not joining any events again until there is ghost mode option.

  46. I had several awesome races with randoms online today racing the new F1. It was great, no one crashed into one another and I didn't hear one bad word, not a single word actually.

  48. I've done a total of 3 races and boy were they filled with your typical terrible drivers! If only non-contact were the only setting for these(all) races the races would be so much more fun for players who actually want to race rather than trolls joining just to troll others.

  53. I just bought the Ocelot R88 and I immediately… REGRETTED IT. I tried to sell it but it only sells for 1.99 million and because I'm a console player I don't have countless billions like pc players so it's a big deal to lose 1.2 million. 😭😭

    1: literally everyone who doesn't know what to do crashes at corner one, no exception
    2: be careful for the first few turns
    3: after all the boobs crashed try to catch up to the top 3 again
    4: overtake them with your experience you have from project Homecoming
    5: win the race with over half the people lapped and over 1 minute ahead of the second place in a 10 lap race
    This describes it pretty much perfect

  58. What hit me the most in running a few of these today was that if I let the downforce work for me at speed, then I was genuinely able to take turns with gusto. If I lost confidence in that idea it cost me on lap times. It's nice that the effect of my setup really factored in my outcome. When I went balls deep, and I'm not talking about hairpins, but on turns I'd have never attempted in any other GTA vehicle, I was rewarded. I like that guts means something in this. Some tracks really sucked though and seemed to have little to do with anything I'd consider F1 worthy and gave me zero indication as to what was beyond the turn I was currently in. Some were ok. The tracks in general seemed rushed or lazy. I'll be anxious to see what people do once this goes to Creator.

  62. I feel like "Lap It Up" would be a pretty decent circuit if it had more elevation changes, less straights and possibly a few more corners that you actually have to let off/brake for. I'm looking forward to the Open Wheel Creator being available to the public.

Best thing about this update was I got to try it during the 1st hour and managed to get a (very short lived) laptime WR, but it unlocked the achievement and tatoo (lol it has only taken 7 years). The racing I have enjoyed I kind of like the extra strategy involved. Did about 5 races with randoms 2 of which were cleanish, the other 3 races were a s#it show! on one 10 lap race I pitted about 8 times to replace the rear wing only to lose it again on the next corner due to corner bombing.
    But it is a great step in the right direction as I metioned before the strategy, the tuning options, the fact that catch up is turned off as default, the tracks I have tried seem a bit more technical, these are all big plus points for me.
    But I have to say the Casino heist DLC has been my favourite update since original heists as it has satisfied the 2 things I love PVE heisting and PVP racing. Good job Rstar and good job Broughy for still being the best GTA5 youtuber.

  67. I have my f1 car set up for the most traction possible. With all the corners, hair pins, and braking, I'll never reach the minimum top speed with all the spoilers maxed out any way.

    Le Mans (not an F1 track but who cares)

  69. The only way to play these races is with contact off. GTA is full of trolls so its the only way tbh

  70. never had such a disciplined lobby… only rammers and someone who drives in the other direction…

  71. Low front wing and small extreme spoiler will give u higher top speed but sucks at cornering.
    Max grip wing and large extreme spoiler will increase downforce and cornering but top speed will suffer.
    So you have choose the configuration for different types of tracks.
    The heightof society track is where top speed matters. So put a small extreme spoiler and low wing bumper/ average front bumper for decent cornering speed.

    Fort zancudo and los santos airport tracks have tight hairpin turns and not many straights where extreme wing spoiler and max grip front wing will matter.
    Customize the pr4 for cornering and R88 for top speed


  73. I agree that the community tracks will be better than what Rockstar has created. Having said that I am pleasantly surprised by how good the Rockstar ones are, I think they are pretty good and some of them flow really nicely. I was worried they would have tubes and loops and stunt race style ridiculous jumps but there is none of that. They are better than what I expected and make for some good racing. The dirty racing is annoying but I wonder if this will improve in time, I think most of the dirty racers will be drawn back to stunt races where they can knock you off the track with no penalty to themselves, at the moment, everyone is trying the new content.

    Overall I am pleased with what they have created here, I think they have done a good job and I never thought we would get racing content this good in GTA. Catch up is not allowed!

    I would love it if you could change tire type in race, if I have to pit to get that wing fixed on the second to last lap I want to opt for softs even if I picked hards at the start. If this can be done I have not found how. Really wish it made cars non contact when they start driving the wrong way or have not moved for 30 seconds. Is qualifying too much to hope for?

  75. This is honestly the most fun I've had racing in gta. Somewhat of a strategy involved with pitting and its much better in non contact. I still havent found a need to use anything except for soft against random people online though.

  83. The races in my opinion, are fun but to the average player who just does the races for the double money are very annoying in my opinion, I literally had this one guy chase me down just so he can crash into me and make me lose car parts

  88. I don't play GTA but will have to because I'm a huge F1 fan. But I agree with many, the community is the main issue and it has made me quit racing in this game altogether. It's a shame

  90. Uninteresting Trivia: Whether by design or by incompetence (probably the latter), a new car class has been added before this… when the later Issi models were added.

    Up until that point, there had been a COMPACT car class (VC_COMPACT in vehicles.meta), for some unknown reason, someone at Rockstar decided to put an 'S' on the end of the Issi Classic car class, thus COMPACTS (VC_COMPACTS in vehicles.meta) was born.

    All Issi models released since then, have been in this same COMPACTS class, while everything else remains in the COMPACT class… including the Asbo and Kanjo which were both added after the later Iss models. Not quite as game changing as OPEN_WHEEL but a new car class all the same.

  93. Whenever I try to do an F1 race. The host will just put it in non-contact. I understand why but jeeze does it ruin the fun πŸ˜•.

  94. I just played a couple with my friends and I even came 1st in one and it was fun but people were intentionally driving the wrong way round the track and crashing into each other

  95. The only thing i complain are the cars themselves and not using wet wheels on wet surfaces

  96. That Zancudo track is 95% flat out. Only the 2 hairpins mean you have to brake.
    I also made a track very similar to the LSIA one. Wonder what an open wheeler would be like around it
