The Rules of Badminton – EXPLAINED!

The Rules of Badminton – EXPLAINED!

Ninh explains the Rules of Badminton
Badminton, is a game played as singles (where one person plays against one person) or doubles
(where two people play against two people). The object of the game is for you or your
team to win 2 sets faster than your opponent. To win a set, you must score 21 points and
be at least two points ahead. If the scores are 20-20 for example, the game
carries on until one player or pair has a two point lead.
Okay then, so how do you score these points? To score a point, you must aim to hit the
shuttlecock, which is usually cork with feathers with your racket over the net and onto your
opponent’s floor without the opponent returning the favour.
The court is 13.4m long and 6.1m wide, and the net is 1.55 m above the ground.
Pay attention to these lines, as the boundaries are different for singles and doubles.
To start the game, a player must serve the shuttlecock below the waist.
The shuttlecock must travel over the net and land in the areas defined for a serve to be
legal. If the shuttlecock is hit onto the lines – this
also counts as a point. The opponent will then try and return the
shuttlecock and make you miss returning it back.
This can go back and forth and is known as a ‘rally’. Remember, the aim of the game is to hit the
shuttlecock onto your opponents floor, and these are the area’s you’re aiming for.
There are several shots you can utilise to try and win points. These include:
Forehand backhand
slice, touch and
smash Hitting the shuttlecock over a net onto the
floor so that your opponent can’t return it sounds simple enough, but in badminton
– it’s very easy to lose points. There’s a lot of things you can’t do in
badminton You cannot hit the shuttlecock outside the
area of play You cannot hit the shuttlecock twice in succession.
You cannot touch the net. You cannot hit the shuttlecock into the net
and it land on your side of the court. You cannot touch the shuttlecock with any
part of your body except with the racket and as earlier mentioned; you must serve the
shuttlecock legally. If you commit any of these errors, this results
in your opponents being awarded a point. Once a player or pair has won a point, they
are also awarded the next serve. Once a player or a pair has won 21 points
and is at least 2 points ahead, they win a set.
First pair to win 3 sets faster than their opponent … wins.
Now that’s basically badminton in a nutshell, but there’s a few things you’ll need to
understand before playing or going to a game. For example … Fault.
At any point, if the referee notices and of these infractions: Let
Unlike Tennis, if the shuttlecock hits the net, it counts!
Lets are generally called when something unexpected has interrupted. Here’s a list of common
lets. In this case, the point must be replayed. 30th Point If in the rare instance that a score reaches
29-29, the person who scores the 30th point wins the set without having to gain a two
point lead. As you can tell, Badminton is an extremely
fast sport and it looks difficult, but as you watch or play Badminton, the rules will
become clear. If you have found this video at all helpful,

  1. Thanks , this video really helped me 😀

  2. can i ask a question? for example, i serve then it should be on the outside (idk that it is out) but still not dropping, then my opponent hits it (he really smash it) but he failed to. then the ball drops outside (remember that he smashes it but failed), which score should be? mine or my opponent? please answer it.

  3. thanks but if I serving from right and the shuttle falls on the midline will I get a point or I will loose a point

  4. when it is served, if the shuttlecock land in the middle line or any boundary line of legal side, what is the decision? is it right or wrong?

  19. Thank you so much I am good at badminton but I always get muddled up with rules this video has clarified it all thx bro!!

  20. At 1:06, it states that while serving if it lands on the white line then it's considered in, am I understanding this correctly? My question is only when serving. Also, when playing doubles does this rule count. Not but least when serving in a double games, if the shuttlecock lands or touches any part of the white land then is it considered in?

  21. Good video. Quite interesting! I have played for many years and one thing I never knew was that you have to be inside the court to play the shuttlecock! Does that mean both feet or can you have one foot in and the other out? Also does logic dictate that if you step outside the court at any time you lose the point? For example running for a cross-court shot?
Finally, I have had some questions in my mind about what is in or out when it comes to different parts of the shuttlecock. Is it the cork or the feathers or both that can hit the line and be determined as in? For example, where a smash flattens the shuttlecock at high speed, can any part of the shuttlecock hitting the line be determined as in?
Secondly, if during a serve for example and the shuttlecock lands vertically where the cork lands outside the line but it then falls straight over with the feathers touching the line, what should be the correct call?
Almost worth a video to explain, I think! ?
    Many thanks

  57. What are sets? (Please answer immediately , I've got a test)

  58. Thanks for the vid. I've been playing badminton ever since I was a kid, but always at home and was never in any competitions. I was always the best in class in school (because I played so much), but for some reason I never thought I could actually play it "serious"… probably for the lack of playing in my town as well. Now when our university apparently has badminton competitions I've started to reconsider that, but I don't know the rules at all. I was fearing it'd be too difficult to learn, but this actually seems doable. So yeah, thanks!

  59. When the shuttle lands on the line, is it the shadow of the cork that must hit the line? or the shadow including the feathers? I'm lead to believe its just the cork.

  60. Wow! Ppwerful sports. Nakakagigil na laro, super exciting.

  66. what I want to know is: If you serve, do you have to serve so that the shuttle lands behind the opponents diagonally positioned short service line? Or can you get a score even if it lands in the forecourt?

  67. thank you sir! Sir do you have rules of badminton in written form?

  68. Simple and easy to understand but the background music is interfering. Kind of hard for different english accent.

  69. What's with the Tekken 3 music?

  70. Thank gosh i found this i have tryouts tomorrow and i forgot some rules and i was panicking because i couldnt find any helpful videos. thanks again xD

  71. What does 'right ' mean in badminton

  72. It's a huge sport in Asian countries …… Like India, China, Japan, Indonesia ,etc

  73. Great video as always Ninh! As many already are aware it is quite obvious that the best badminton players in the world come from Malaysia and Indonesia. Many years ago back in 1970 the men's world singles champion was from my hometown here in Calgary Alberta Canada. His name is Jamie Paulsen. I learned to play badminton using those now seemingly ancient wooden racquets. They needed to be put in a press to prevent warping. Sort of makes me feel elderly now doesn't it??

  74. Can I use this video on a school project?

  75. can someone explain the rule for foot on the line on a serve? Im writing an assignment for Pe.

  76. In case if the shuttle hits the shaft/handle

  77. Can it hit the net on a serve?

  78. Damn great Video!!! Thanks!!

  79. While in service, if the shuttle cock touches the net and lands in opposite right court, does it count as valid service ?

  81. Helped me alot thanks

  82. The best game ever

  83. One question..if the racket cross the net to opponent side but if the cock is not cross will that situation fault or right I confused..please can any one help me

  84. Hi. About the serve.. i wanna know where you are allowed to serve. I mean, if you serve and the ball lands just over the net, is it still valid, or it should land in the red square from minute 0:48? I'm asking because i saw a little bit later in the video that the ball that hit the net and crossed over is would've fell short, but the player took it back in play…so, do you have to serve just over the net diagonally, or the serve could also be too short? Sorry for my bad english, and please help me:D thank you:)
