The Rules of Tennis – EXPLAINED!

The Rules of Tennis – EXPLAINED!

Ninh explains the Rules of Tennis
Tennis, is a game played as singles (where one person plays against one person) or doubles
(where two people play against two people). The object of the game is for you or your
team to score more points and to win sets faster than the opposing player or team. In the women’s
game you have to win 2 sets, and in the men’s game, you must win 3 sets.
To win a set, you must win at least 6 games, and be at least 2 games ahead.
To win a game, you must win 4 points and be at least two points ahead.
Hey, whoa … I’m confused already?! Okay, let’s start from the beginning …
The tennis court is 78ft long by 36ft wide, and the net is 3.5 ft above the ground.
These are some of the other dimensions of the court, and note that the area of play
is different for both singles and doubles. The game starts with one player making a serve.
To do this, they must stand behind the line and hit the ball into this area of the opponent’s
court. The opponent is allowed a maximum of one bounce
to hit the ball back over the net onto the other players court.
The idea is to hit the ball onto your opponents court and for your opponent not to be able
to hit it back. If you manage to successfully hit the ball
onto your opponents court without them returning the favour, you score.
If you score one point, you score ‘15’ If you score two points, you score ‘30’
If you score three points, you score ‘40’ And if you score four points, and are two
points ahead, you win the game. The only time this is different is when the
score is 40-40. This is known as deuce, and you now have to
win two straight points to win the game. After a game is won, the other player or pair
serves the ball from the other side to start the next game.
Once a player has won 6 games and is at least 2 games ahead, they win a set.
Winning 2 sets or 3 sets faster than your opponents, wins you the Match. So umm … is there anything you can’t do
in Tennis? Ironically, yes! There’s a lot of things
you cannot do in Tennis You cannot hit the ball outside the area of
play. You cannot hit the ball into the net and for
it to land on your side of the court. You cannot hit the ball twice in succession.
You cannot touch the net. You cannot touch the ball with any part of
your body except with the racket and you cannot commit a double fault.
If you commit any of these infractions, this results in your opponents being awarded a
point. Now that’s basically Tennis in a nutshell,
but there’s a few things you’ll need to understand before playing or going to a game. For example …
Fault/Double Fault During a serve, you have two chances to serve
the ball legally. You must be behind the line and you must hit
the ball onto this area of your opponents court. Should you fail to do either of those
things, this is known as a fault and you must serve the ball again.
If you commit two faults in a row, this is a double fault, and your opponent is automatically
awarded a point. Let
If a legal serve hits the net before landing in the opponents area, this is known as a
let, and the player is allowed to serve the ball again without fault. Ace If a player serves the ball legally and the
opponent cannot return the ball, this is known as an ‘ace’. The serving player wins the
point. Advantage
During deuce, if you score one point – you are known to have an ‘advantage’. You
only need one more point to win the game unless your opponent scores. Tie Breaker.
If the games are tied at 6-6, a tiebreaker is used to determine who wins the set.
Players take it in turns to serve and the aim is to score 7 points and be at least two
points ahead. This carries on until someone wins the set. If you’re still into sure about the scoring
system – be sure to watch a few games to get used to how it all works. It seems a little
complicated, but once you watch or play Tennis, the rules will become clear.

  31. The scoring system is so needlessly complicated while the game is simple enough to grasp in a few minutes. Pretty strange combination of factors.

  32. Okay tennis players. I'm 11 and I play softball I loved that so much and want to try more (volleyball ,tennis) but I don't know anything about it but when high school rolls around I want to play but like all school teams you have to try out now I was wondering If you think I can learn how to play and be okay at it in a small amount of time. Or is it easy to play and will I embarrass myself.

  34. I'm hopefully trying out for the tennis team at my school this year, I knew almost nothing about tennis but thankfully this vid helped me. I'm extremely nervous cuz 1. I'm scared to be judged. 2. The ball scares me. So idk what to do aH

  45. Martin Van Buren was the 8th President of the United

  46. Almost clear…now need to watch some games before Australia open final Tomorrow…. Thanks mate

  47. I have tennis tryouts tomorrow and you saved me tbh

  48. Okay. Two question. Does it mater if you use 1 or 2 hands? And does it matter which of the two smaller squares your serve to??

  49. Why is this so confusing to me

  50. Me and My girlfriend love tennis but we suck. So we might just give up & call it quits ?

  51. I’m literally playing my first game tomorrow as doubles and this video helped me out and my partner as well.

  52. I'm here because of Infinite Jest.
Edit: I, too, would have to be on drugs to want to play this game.

  53. Very helpful . Thanks

  54. And here I am during Feb 28 crying and waiting for spring to play tennis ??????????

  55. Not to be rude but isn’t 2:50 not a let because it didn’t go in the right area after hitting the net??

  56. After 10 years. I finally understand

  57. This helped so much I’m going to start playing tennis for my school and I have no idea about scoring or rules or how to play and this definitely helped 🙂

  58. Thanks for the video I’m doing varsity tennis this year at my high school

  59. Yeah.. I gotta something
    . thanks ??

  60. Would I not score a point if I hit my opponent's body and the ball bounce back to my court? Would that be my opponent's point?

  61. Did you know that John McEnroe has a boat named “Match Point”?

  62. From which side should you serve? Right or left?

  63. This video was so helpful thank you so much

  64. Maybe the official sport of Tennessee is Tennis? (Tennis see)

  65. There should be one more, CHALLENGE

  66. wtf why is it different for women's and men's? 0:15

I can't do this no more

  67. Oh my. I was not doing it like that.Great info, thank you very much!

  68. I’ve played tennis for a while now, and I learned that rules by playing wii sports

  69. Thanks very much for this Ninh Ly, since Tennis, Badminton, Ice Hockey, Soccer, and American Football equal my favorite sports, and

what I'm very much a fan of. I very much appreciate you explaining the rules of Tennis over this.

  70. I like how the tennis racket is considered as a part of your body. Like, "This racket and I are ONE !" 2:12

  71. Awesome video thanks

  72. you did not explain who serves when

  73. Great video, thank you so much! Terrible rules, shame on whoever made the scoring rule for tennis. 🙂

  74. I just realised how confusing the scoring system actually is because of this video. I grew up playing tennis so i'm used to it but now that I think about it, the scoring system is really strange due to the three parts of the score: Points within games, games and sets where it would generally be points and sets in other sports.

  75. Live this video and tennis too

  76. Thank you for the vid

  77. Referencing 1:43: I have a question on how you win a set in tennis. Is winning a set similar to winning a game where it goes on forever until a player wins two in a row when tied or players are separated by only one game? (Consider a game is 5-5 and the other side wins a game and makes it 5-6) thank you!

  78. omg thank you. when my family was trying to explain the sets and games i couldn’t understand.

  79. Wonder why they chose those numbers as the score? Why don't they just use "1-4" ?

  80. Get all the explanations about “deuce” but still can’t see why they just don’t call it 40 all. After all we know you need 2 points to win the game after that, we don’t need to be reminded!

  81. What if the ball hits the top of the net and makes it to the other side during a game, do they carry on? Or does a point go to the other player.

  82. Do you have to hit the ball inside of the rectangle?

  83. Thank you so much.

  84. still confused ngl

  85. Great video, thank you for making this. Its very easy for me to understand and comprehend

  86. Scoring system is very strange. Took a lot of time to understand

  87. So men have to win more games than woman and yet woman get equal pay? Lmao.

  88. 2:10 can someone inform this man that the tennis racket is in fact, not part of the body. Thanks. ?

    Very helpful video! Thanks!

  89. 2:53 – you say that a Let requires the ball to have hit the net on a serve and land in the opponent's area, yet the video shows Murray's serve hitting the net and bouncing off wide. Is that a let, because it didn't bounce back onto Murray's side of the net? Or is the clip simply a misrepresentation because a Let must still land within the legal square on the opponent's side?

  90. You change side every odd number of games

  91. I’m playing tennis next year (well in a couple of weeks bc school starts August 19 for me) and I haven’t played tennis since seventh grade and I’m now a freshman going into high school and I feel like I won’t be good enough :(, but for now I will try to practice more on my footwork bc that’s what I had trouble with. I just hope I will not be thought less of ..

  92. I'm finally going to go to tennis in one hour

  93. Probably the most simple and straightforward explanation ever. Great work.

  94. I’m starting tennis this year.
