When I was child I saw my parents, they have
a backyard garden, but it was not big its small.
But they grow many things, but our life is
very healthy because we are saving the seed
and sharing in the community.
Okay my name is Wah I am from Chiang Mai province
and I am the seed bank manager.
and this is the ECHO Asia Seed Bank Farm.
We start the ECHO Asia Seed Bank in 2009.
In the beginning we did not have experience
about the seed saving. and we learnt by doing
We have many kinds of seed.
Also, we have many different techniques which
P’Paw will show you.
Hi, My Name is Paw I am seed bank information
and quality control.
Wah she is very good boss, she is very
kind and she taught me everything in the seed
bank how to work, how to do, how to learn many
things from her.
Yea she is very good, very good boss.
It’s very good for me to learn.
If I do only the documentation others I cannot
help if I do not do by myself I cannot talk
I cannot share because the our work is very
important to do the experiment and do the
sharing the information sharing the techniques.
It’s like two staff from the Myanmar came
here to learn about the seed saving process
they learn from here and they go
back and they start at the area.
In the past I never knew about how to save
the seeds systematically but after I got the training
from ECHO I came back here and got a chance
to do and research together with other staff
about the information that I learnt from ECHO
to develop seed saving techniques here at
the Kahilu center.
I see ECHO would like to preserve the local
seed in our country we have lost a lot of
variety, so ECHO taught me how to preserve the
local seed for sustainable living.
After learning all of this I am very excited
to come back and work here and implement here
When I was there at the seed bank they had
many staff and I was closest with Wah and
Paw and I learnt many things from them.
And I am very happy with my work.
It’s like learn, its like every step.
We’re about to arrive up hear at the kahilu
small farm resource center.
Which is an association of churches in the
Irrawaddy Delta region of Myanmar.
They have this small farm resource center
to service farmers and people related to agricultural
trades, and so they do a lot of good work
meeting physical needs but also the spiritual.
We are doing a workshop all about seed saving
in the tropics.
You know when we came in January it was a
pretty new concept kind of a new idea this
It’s something that has been lost.
You know I wasn’t sure if there would be much
I wasn’t sure if there would be much retention
of this information.
I think sometimes it sticks and sometimes it doesn’t,
but it stuck here.
When I come back to see their production plot
or their work.
I am very happy and also encourage me to continue
my work and also to practice more and to share
our experience to other people more.
Please continue to do the share with the community
and also share back with us.
What I love about ECHO is I think they’re that
perfect merge of mission, holistic ministry
but also technically skilled experienced
and really take it very seriously the job
that they do.
We have a lot of information over 35 years
and that information is not academic research
information it is very on the ground information.
It’s very easy to apply very easy to read
easy to understand so the information that
ECHO has is sutible for the local farmer,
to apply it on their own farm.
They were planting these in January at the
seed bank workshop.
I am so encouraged by the work that you have
done since January.
ECHO Asia has given us an opportunity to go
down another road that is going to be very
One thing that makes ECHO unique is that we
are not on the ground, typically not working
directly with the farmer.
We love the smallholder farmer and we support
the smallholder farmer.
Everything we do is geared towards the smallholder farmer, but we are a small organisation.
We work with partners we work with missionaries,
development workers, peace core, we work with
people that are already on the ground.
Those are the people that have the impact
and so if we can support that,
that’s what we do that’s what we are good at
The workshop has at least two purpose one is
to network people because people come from
many place then they come to the same place
and they get to know each other.
The second goal is to provide information
or knowledge because when we do workshops
or trainings we will have a specific topic
we will provide them and teach them then they
can take that information and go back and
do their job.
This farm this kahilu small farm resource
They’re using what they learned at ECHO Asia
in Thailand and they are contextualising it
and they are making it attainable and something
that can be used and replicated by a local
They have done it in a way that we could never
Because they are local they know the language
they have the relationships they know the
needs of the people in this community they’ve
made it possible for a small holder farmer right
down the road to benefit from it and that’s
that’s something we couldn’t have done, on
our own had we come in and just tried to start
If we try to do some high technology they
cannot access. Right, we try to, our staff try
to do the simple, simple techniques and work
and share and they can they can spread out
they can go and do and share more and more
its multiply more.
People come back and ask why are you doing
what you do?
How are you good at what you do, and that just
opens up so many doors.
We are pretty excited to introduce to our
network that we have established and are in
the process of transitioning to a new small farm
Which is about 25 minutes outside of Chiang
Mai and we are pretty excited to let people
know that this new site is going to be an
amazing new place to showcase small sustainable
ag production systems and to demonstrate innovative
ideas technical resources of merit that can
be used to engage the smallholder farmers
We will be housing a larger seed bank
with more seed varieties and options.
We are doing it in a way that is appropriate
and contextualised our staff here have done
an amazing job of creating this site to be
a holistic small farm resource center.
Most of it is in the works but we are excited to
have this new opportunity.
If you find yourself in Chiang Mai or northern
Thailand or in the region I would love for
you to come by and see our new small farm
Come see us, come get your hands dirty on
the farm come teach us some things too.
